Like it or not, this is going to happen – we live in an environment that encourages mould and mildew to thrive, which causes the staining on render.
Renders do go green…sometimes black, sometimes red. Now, unless you’ve got Green, Black, or Red render, this is probably going to be an issue.
Let’s look at why this happens and what environmental impacts you’re going to face with your property.
Now render is a funny old thing as it’s changed over the years, originally there was Lime render, Cement render, Pebble dash ( who doesn’t know a house with pebbledash ), painted render through to polymer modified render and now you have through colour Monochue render, you’ve got Silicone or Acrylic-based render with different-sized grains. You’ve got a variety of different manufacturers making their products slightly differently from each other. You might not even know which one you have in your home. What is guaranteed no matter what, you’ve got it’s going to need a clean!
You’re never going to be able to control environmental factors; these factors are going to have an impact on your render. These can be things such as vegetation, living near the sea or channel and taking a prevailing wind direction, living close to a busy road with traffic pollution or lack of sunlight on an elevation that encourages damp and mould. These are all going to make your render stained and discoloured over time.
Most of us will have an environmental factor to contend with, but even without one, eventually everything gets dirty. So why does it get dirty? The reason is bacterial growth. Simple as that. Bacteria grow, multiply, and then manifest as a stain on your render – whether it’s green, red or black.
You’re also very susceptible to damaging your render by leaving bacterial growth on your property. Bacterial growth gets into all the tiny pores in the render; over time, they widen the pores and make the render more absorbent – leading to water ingress. Fast forward to the next cold snap, and BOOM, you’re scrolling Google looking for a renderer because your render has blown and you need your house re-rendered.
What you can change is how or when you get your render cleaned, let’s be honest for a second… you’ve spent thousands of pounds buying your property, so you want it looking great, and you want the neighbours thinking you’ve got a clean house !! If you have your render cleaned as a periodic measure, you’re not going to get the discolouration or staining. You will protect the render, and you will keep having the best-looking house on the street.
Protecting your render is future proofing your investment – the best bit is the transformation it makes to your house, you genuinely won’t believe just how good your render will look once its been professionally softwashed!
